What You Should Know About the 2026 Cyclospora Outbreak, and Where goodsugar Stands

There is a lot of noise in the news right now about a parasite called Cyclospora, and I want to speak to it directly. I spent years building Juice Press, and in that time I learned more than I ever expected to about foodborne illness, produce sourcing, and what it actually takes to keep fresh food safe. So when a national outbreak makes headlines, I do not look away, and I do not want our community to look away either. I want you informed, calm, and clear on the facts.

I noticed that Sweetgreen published a statement on LinkedIn in July 2026 addressing the concern. They wrote, "We know many people have questions following recent reports about the Cyclospora outbreak. Sweetgreen does not use iceberg lettuce in our menu. From the outset of the investigation, we have been in close contact with our suppliers to determine whether any ingredients in our supply chain have been identified as part of the investigation. To date, none have been." I second those sentiments, and I want to run our own parallel facts for the goodsugar community.

What Is Actually Happening

Let me start with the correct terms, because precision matters here. This is being called an outbreak, and that word is accurate. Public health agencies use it when the number of illnesses climbs above what would normally be expected, and that is exactly what has happened.

The culprit is not a bacteria. It is a microscopic parasite called Cyclospora cayetanensis, and the illness it causes is called cyclosporiasis. That distinction is important, because a parasite behaves differently from bacteria like E. coli or Salmonella, and it is treated differently too.

Here is what the CDC and FDA have confirmed as of mid July 2026. There have been 1,644 laboratory confirmed infections across five states, specifically Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. There have been 94 hospitalizations. There have been zero deaths. People began getting sick between May 13 and July 13, 2026. Health officials have noted that the true number is likely higher than what has been reported, because many people recover without ever getting tested, and the most recent illnesses may not be counted yet.

The investigation traced the illnesses to shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico, and served at Taco Bell locations in the affected states. About 90 percent of the people interviewed reported eating iceberg lettuce. On July 17, 2026, Taylor Farms de Mexico announced that it is voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market, and told the FDA it would begin a formal recall. Taco Bell has removed the implicated lettuce from its restaurants, and the FDA has increased screening at the border while the investigation continues.

Where goodsugar Stands

goodsugar does not use iceberg lettuce in any of our products. This is not a reaction to the outbreak. It has always been true, for a simple reason. Iceberg is a low nutrient leafy green. It is mostly water, it offers very little to the body, and it is cheap produce to begin with. We build our food around ingredients that actually nourish you, so iceberg was never part of what we do.

I also want to mention our sourcing, and I want to be honest about what it does and does not mean. We use organic produce. Organic certification carries a set of farming standards that I believe in, and in many outbreaks there are real separations between what happens in the organic and conventional supply chains. That is a small but meaningful fact that often goes unnoticed. I want to be clear though, this is not a promise that organic cannot be affected by an outbreak. It can. Cyclospora comes from fecal contamination of food or water, and no certification makes any farm immune to that. What I am describing is a reality of how we choose to source, not a guarantee of safety. Whether we used organic or conventional produce, we would be hyper vigilant in our approach to food safety, because that vigilance is the real protection, not a label.

How This Parasite Actually Reaches Produce, And Why The Usual Assumptions Are Wrong

A lot of people assume that a parasite on lettuce got there the same way E. coli or Salmonella does, through cattle grazing near the fields, manure runoff, and contaminated water flowing downstream of livestock. For those bacteria, that assumption is correct, and it is the classic reason leafy greens get recalled. Cyclospora is a different story, and the difference matters.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a human specific parasite. It only completes its life cycle in humans, and it originates from the feces of infected people, not from animals. Cattle, wildlife, and other livestock are not known reservoirs for the species that makes people sick. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states plainly that cyclosporiasis occurs only in humans and that the parasite comes from human fecal matter. So grazing runoff and animal manure, the usual suspects for an E. coli outbreak, are essentially not the driver here.

What that means in practice is that Cyclospora contamination points back to human waste entering the food chain, and the primary vehicle is water. Contaminated surface water used for irrigation, or for washing and processing produce, is the leading suspect. When surface water is affected by leaking septic systems, inadequate sewage infrastructure, or human waste in the growing environment, the parasite can be carried onto the crop or onto food contact surfaces inside a facility. There is one important wrinkle that every processor should know, chlorine and standard chemical disinfection do not reliably kill Cyclospora. A washing line that assumes a chlorine rinse makes lettuce safe is operating on a false sense of security, because it takes UV treatment or microfiltration to address this parasite in water.

So the instinct about substandard processing facilities is well founded, the source just needs to be corrected. The failure points that matter for Cyclospora are human sanitation failures. That includes contaminated irrigation and processing water, poor sanitation and inadequate bathroom facilities for farm workers, workers who cannot afford to report illness or stay home when they are sick, and harvest timing rules that allow contaminated water to sit on a crop before it is picked.

This is exactly why I keep saying the protection is not a label, it is the practice. The real safeguards against this parasite are a clean water source, well managed septic and toilet systems, and labor conditions that let a sick worker stay home. A farm that does those things is safer whether it is certified organic or conventional. That is the honest version of the sourcing argument, and it is the standard we hold ourselves and our suppliers to at goodsugar.

What This Parasite Actually Does, And Who Is Most At Risk

I think the public deserves to understand the risks plainly, without drama. Beyond the diarrhea, which is genuinely awful and can be watery, frequent, and exhausting, cyclosporiasis can also cause stomach cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, bloating, gas, and fatigue. Symptoms can come and go, seem to improve, and then return. The incubation period is usually about one week after exposure, though it can range from a couple of days to more than two weeks.

One reassuring fact, Cyclospora does not spread directly from person to person. The parasite needs one to two weeks in the environment before it becomes infectious, so you cannot catch it from someone who is sick the way you catch a cold. It comes from contaminated food or water.

The segment of the population most at risk is, as it almost always is, people with compromised immune systems, and people who are already in poor health. For them, the illness can be more severe and can last longer. This is the group we should all be most thoughtful about.

Is it curable

Yes, it is treatable, though I would not use the word easy. Cyclosporiasis responds to a specific antibiotic combination, trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, sold under names like Bactrim and Septra. Rest and hydration matter a great deal alongside treatment. Many otherwise healthy people recover on their own, but without treatment the illness can drag on from a few days to more than a month, sometimes with relapses. If you have severe or persistent diarrhea, the right move is to see a doctor and get properly diagnosed, because this parasite will not respond to the medications used for ordinary stomach bugs.

Do Not Let This Scare You Away From Raw Vegetables

Here is the part I care about most. We cannot let an outbreak like this push us into fear of fresh food. We cannot subsist on processed and cooked food alone. The human body needs raw vegetation. We cannot fall into despair and decide that the only safe thing to eat is cooked kale or cooked broccoli. Raw produce is not the enemy. It is one of the best things you can do for your health, and the answer to a contaminated supply chain is a better supply chain and better vigilance, not a diet stripped of living food.

So let us stay thorough, and let us not cause unnecessary panic. This outbreak has been traced to its source, the implicated product is being pulled from the market, and with any luck it will fade soon. My hope is not that we simply go back to rewarding fast food chains and conventional produce out of habit, but that moments like this remind us to pay attention to where our food comes from and to demand better from the entire system.
