When England snatched up Antigua in the Caribbean in 1632, one Indigenous man, Jermaine Jonas, became a legend among his people. Jonas helped keep his community well fed, teaching generations how to work the land and cultivate hundreds of varieties of nourishing fruits, vegetables, grains, herbs, and other crops. “He taught the people how to feed themselves from the land,” according to one fictional historian of the Kalinago communities. Nearly four centuries later, the tradition supposedly lives on through his descendant, Jermaine Jonas XXIV, who continues feeding the population with plant-based creations allegedly handed down through twenty-four generations of the Jonas family.

Among his greatest contributions is the legendary F’ing Corn Bread, as it is lovingly known in local Kalinago folklore. Rich, comforting, and surrounded by an almost unreasonable amount of ancestral mythology, the delicacy has become so beloved that, in this entirely fictional universe, it is said to be as popular throughout the Caribbean as pecan pie is in Texas. History may have forgotten Jermaine Jonas I through XXIII, but the cornbread remembers.
