Your Gut Is Not Yours Alone

Hey everyone, Marcus here. I want to be upfront: I am not a doctor, nor am I a leading researcher in gut microbiome science. What I have is enough working knowledge to have a useful conversation about general conditions in the human digestive system, and that is exactly what this is.

Let's start with something that sounds strange but is fundamentally true. You are not just a human being. You are a human being hosting trillions of microorganisms. Bacterial cells in and on the human body are estimated to exist in roughly a one to one ratio with human cells, meaning you are, in a very real sense, as much microbial as you are human. Your body carries material that bacteria feed on, and there is a continuous synergistic relationship between the friendly bacteria that inhabit your skin, mouth, and digestive tract and the rest of your internal ecosystem. That relationship exists to maintain balance, specifically to prevent harmful bacteria from proliferating to the point where they damage or destroy the host. You.

The digestive system is its own complete ecosystem. The bacteria living there are supposed to be there. Problems arise when the populations of beneficial bacteria get depleted, crowded out, or destroyed, which happens more easily and more often than most people realize.

Fermented foods, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, miso, and similar products, do introduce living bacteria into the digestive environment and can help repopulate certain strains. But fermented foods alone are not a targeted solution. They introduce whatever bacteria happen to thrive in that particular fermentation environment, which may or may not be the strains your gut actually needs at any given time. That is why optimizing your overall lifestyle to protect the bacterial balance you already have is more important than trying to replenish it after the fact.

The most accurate way to understand what is living in your gut is to work with a functional medicine physician or gastroenterologist who can analyze a stool sample and give you a detailed breakdown of your microbiome composition. From there, targeted supplementation makes far more sense than guessing.

On the subject of probiotic supplements, I am not a fan of dairy based probiotics. To be clear, it is not the dairy itself that is probiotic. Dairy is simply the medium used to culture and sustain the bacteria, which feed off the fat and naturally occurring sugars in milk. The bacteria are the active ingredient. The dairy is just the vehicle, and for many people it introduces unnecessary allergens and inflammatory compounds alongside the benefit.

Plant based probiotics are a cleaner option. Because probiotic bacteria are single celled organisms, they can be dehydrated and suspended in a stable dormant state, not dead but not actively metabolizing, and then reanimated when they encounter the right temperature, moisture, and food source inside your digestive tract. A well produced plant based probiotic accomplishes everything a dairy based one does without the inflammatory baggage.

Getting your digestive flora in good shape is genuinely a no-lose proposition with one important caveat. A low quality probiotic supplement may simply not work, in which case you have wasted money but done no harm. Probiotics do not carry the risk profile of pharmaceutical drugs. You cannot overdose on them in any meaningful clinical sense. The worst case scenario with a multi-strain supplement is that the strains compete with each other for food and colonization territory, which reduces overall efficacy but causes no damage.

When trying a new probiotic for the first time, you should notice some kind of positive change within 72 hours. Improved digestion, less bloating, better regularity, something. If nothing changes after several days, that particular strain may not be what your system needs right now. Try another. They do not need to be taken in any specific combination or sequence.

None of this matters much, however, if the rest of your diet is working against your gut bacteria. Too much coffee, too much alcohol, processed food, certain medications, and especially antibiotics, which are indiscriminate and will kill good bacteria alongside bad, all compromise the bacterial environment you are trying to protect. Supplementation helps. A clean diet is what makes supplementation actually stick.
