The simplest fix for all parenting problems would be to become an enlightened master, someone free from anxiety and fully grounded in presence. So I’ll see you in about thirty years, after you’ve practiced meditation every day, learned to breathe deeply, and surrounded yourself with nature. Until then, all we can do is practice being awake.
Bring yourself into the present moment with your children, no matter what you are doing. When you cook, cut carrots, or clean, stay connected. Sing to them. Pay attention. Give them quiet time to draw or play beside you. Let them be alone sometimes, even when you are nearby. When they show you their art, stop everything. Say, “This is so important,” because it is. You are witnessing the miracle of a mind developing, you are watching your own early mind in motion. In those moments, you may even glimpse where you became stuck by the unconscious pain of previous generations.
Good parenting is simply the act of returning to presence. It is self-healing in motion. We cannot be present when we are anxious, compulsive, or reacting from the unconscious mind. When we are triggered, we are offline, trapped inside old patterns. That is why breath is the key. Slow, deep breathing, mindful inhalation, gentle retention, and long exhalation, restores balance. It makes us willing again: willing to relax, to be sane, to be loving, to be here.
When we return to presence, it becomes almost impossible to harm, neglect, or overlook our children. Their noise and chaos become part of the beauty. Every other moment spent lost in impatience or reactivity is just us slipping back into the patterns that raised us. That is okay. It takes time to heal.
Healing takes as long as it takes. No one can tell you when peace will come or how fast you’ll grow. It depends on how much work you do, how open you are, and how ready you are to stay consistent. The good news is there is no final destination. You just start today.
Come back to your breath. Practice. Do good things. Stop doing harmful things. Control your temper. Be kind. Go further, maybe live without harming animals, care for the planet, act with reverence toward life itself. None of this will hurt you. Do it all mindfully, with intention. Stay present in the effort. And watch how a beautiful, realized life begins to unfold before your eyes.
