No one could precisely calculate the calories needed to migrate an entire tribe, especially with young children and the elderly, nor could they guarantee safe passage through hostile territories. Even upon finding a promising new location, rival clans might resist their settlement. This uncertainty made staying in one place more appealing, even in harsh conditions, but for some tribes, lack of migration led to a more sedentary lifestyle and reliance on less optimal food sources. In cold or unforgiving climates, securing enough calories often required consuming animal protein—not out of biological necessity or a predetermined human diet, but purely as a matter of opportunity and survival.
