Coffee is an incredibly personal experience. Once we develop a fondness for a particular flavor profile and even the rituals associated with coffee consumption, it becomes challenging to consider change. However, cold brew offers several advantages over its hot counterpart. It is notably less acidic, as hot coffee undergoes a double cooking process, extracting a higher concentration of coffee bean acids and tannins into the water you consume. Consequently, traditional hot coffee may contribute to dehydration, as it prompts the body to allocate more available water to dilute these coffee "toxins."

Coffee is often considered mildly dehydrating for several reasons:

1. Diuretic Effect: Coffee contains caffeine, which is a natural diuretic. Diuretics increase urine production and, consequently, can lead to the loss of fluids from the body. This effect can contribute to a temporary increase in fluid excretion, potentially leading to mild dehydration if not offset by adequate water intake.

2. Increased Urination: When you consume coffee, it stimulates the kidneys to produce more urine. This can result in the expulsion of more fluids from the body, potentially leading to a loss of water and electrolytes.

3. Limited Hydration: Many people replace water or other hydrating beverages with coffee, especially in the morning. If coffee becomes the primary beverage, it may not provide the necessary hydration that the body requires throughout the day.

However, it's important to note that the degree of dehydration caused by coffee varies from person to person. Some individuals may be more sensitive to the diuretic effects of caffeine, while others may not experience significant dehydration. Additionally, factors like the type of coffee consumed (e.g., espresso vs. filtered coffee) and individual tolerance to caffeine can influence its dehydrating effects.

To mitigate the potential dehydration associated with coffee, it's advisable to maintain a balanced intake of water or other hydrating beverages alongside your coffee consumption. Staying well-hydrated throughout the day is essential for overall health and can help offset any mild dehydrating effects of coffee.

In our cold brew process, we begin by roasting the coffee beans. What sets it apart is that we then grind these beans and soak them in water without applying heat. This allows the coffee flavor to gradually infuse into the water. The outcome is a coffee that is notably less acidic compared to traditional hot-brewed coffee. Importantly, the caffeine concentration between cold brew and hot-brewed coffee typically remains identical, ensuring you still get your caffeine fix.

Both hot coffee and cold brew offer a similar flavor profile, making it a matter of personal preference. One additional advantage of cold brew is the absence of coffee brewing machines that require maintenance to prevent mineral deposits, which can affect the taste of the coffee.

It's essential to consider what you add to your coffee to maintain its health benefits. Sweeteners and dairy creamers can transform coffee into a source of inflammation and addictive patterns. Dairy, in particular, can be inflammatory, especially for those with allergies. Using plant-based alternatives like oat milk or almond milk can be a healthier choice. While the best option is no sweetener, if you crave some sweetness, opt for natural, unprocessed sweeteners like agave, maple syrup, yacon, or monk fruit, and avoid processed ones, including refined sugar.

If you're looking to add excitement to your coffee, consider experimenting with ingredients like ginger juice, grapefruit, cinnamon, cardamom, or vanilla extract. We offer an excellent cold brew concoction that includes cold brew coffee, homemade almond milk, ginger, maple syrup, cinnamon, and chipotle. This blend offers a delightful and complex flavor profile that stands apart from oversweetened, acidic, and dehydrating coffee from larger coffee chains.

We also have a blended coffee smoothie called "The Harvey Wallbanger." It not only provides that beloved coffee high but is also a healthy smoothie enriched with banana, making it a wholesome choice for coffee enthusiasts seeking a delicious and nutritious option.
