One on one therapy can be extremely beneficial. But any therapy is only as good as the therapist, the method, and the participation of the patient.
It’s difficult when you’re new to recovery to be able to discern what you need to know about the therapy, the methodology, and the therapist that you’re considering. I think it’s advisable to read a book or two about how to find a therapist beforehand. It also might be advisable to try sessions with a couple of therapists in order to find the one that would be best for you.
When you pick a therapist make sure that you’re comfortable in that therapist’s office. Also make sure that you feel good about the journey to get to the office. That’s important because when the work starts it will uncover difficult emotions, and you don’t want to make excuses for why you don’t want to go back to your therapy.
Therapy can be expensive. But there are ways to get help even if finances are an issue. Many therapists will work on a sliding scale based on your income. Don’t be embarrassed to bring up the subject matter of expense and see if a therapist will still help you.
There is one issue that you need to keep in mind as you consider the expense of therapy. That is that it is expensive to be lost in addiction. Productive therapy might be very inexpensive compared to the mental and physical health costs associated with staying addicted to substances and destructive behaviors.
