Inherited Cycle of Violence

Inherited Cycle of Violence

I must have inherited the violence and abuse perpetrated on my parents and grandparents, which manifested in my life through my parents' violence towards me, their ignorance of violence, and even their permissive nature in allowing violence to infiltrate our home through TV. The violence I grew up with made it seem quite natural. In my early years, I experienced violence from my mother and father. If I recall correctly, I also encountered violence from a bully or two in my early life. Witnessing violence in the natural world, like a tiger killing a gazelle, further reinforced this perception.

Violence is something learned and reinforced repeatedly from many channels of our awareness. It permeates our food, our history, our families of origin, the streets, and even overseas. From a young age, we are exposed to violence in various forms, shaping our understanding and acceptance of it as a part of life. This exposure starts at home, continues in our communities, and is further amplified by media and societal norms.

The artist Banksy, through his art, challenges these norms and brings attention to the pervasive nature of violence. What I admire about Banksy is that he operated as part of a team executing highly impactful marketing strategies. These efforts were aimed at building a brand that became widely recognized. Even if his work doesn't resonate with everyone, the team's success in creating an internationally known brand is undeniable. The impact and familiarity they achieved, regardless of financial gain, is a testament to their ingenuity and influence in the art world.

By addressing issues like violence and other social injustices, Banksy's work encourages us to reflect on our own experiences and the broader societal structures that perpetuate such behaviors. His art serves as a catalyst for change, urging us to break the cycle of violence and strive for a more compassionate and just world.

I am Banksy.
