For every part of life, family, relationships, work, fitness, education, it helps to have a short daily reading you look at long before a problem hits. One small paragraph that reinforces positive thinking and positive behavior. Something you read in the morning before the chaos starts.
For work, I remind myself that my only real limitation is the amount of effort I am willing to put in. I cannot only do the parts I enjoy. That would be leisure, not work. I can enjoy the process, but it still requires effort. I also remind myself that everything I need to do can be written into a list, and it is on me to look at it first thing in the morning and start checking things off.
As we gain more experience, we can write our own meditations, in our own words, for our own eyes. I use index cards. I write a phrase in black Sharpie and tape it somewhere I pass all day. One of my favorites is, the right amount of energy on the right project. It keeps me from drifting through the day. It reminds me that enlightenment is great, but so is keeping the lights on and the refrigerator full. We cannot resist our responsibilities, and we should not avoid them just because they are uncomfortable.
We are not here to coast through life contemplating consciousness under a tree. Even monks deal with stress. I would rather face the challenges of being alive so that when peace finally comes, I know I earned it. Recovery and self help are work. Sometimes we take the stairs, sometimes we take the escalator, sometimes we use modern tools. Sometimes we need an SUV for the terrain.
The point is simple. Build daily reminders. Read them. Use them. Let them shape your day before your day shapes you.
