Alkaline Water and Hydrogen Water: The Markup Dressed as Science

Here's what's really happening. You're paying premium prices for water that has been subjected to chemical manipulation, packaged in plastic that costs pennies to produce, and shipped across the country in trucks burning fuel. The actual water costs nothing. The markup is everything.

Your stomach acid is a pH of around 1.5 to 3.5. When you drink alkaline water, your stomach immediately neutralizes it. Within minutes, the pH elevation you paid for is gone. Any benefit you think you're experiencing is placebo, and placebo is free. You're paying fifteen dollars a bottle for something your digestive system destroys instantly.

Hydrogen water is even more absurd. Yes, hydrogen exists. Yes, hydrogen can theoretically have antioxidant properties in specific contexts. But hydrogen gas escapes from liquid rapidly, especially in plastic bottles exposed to heat and light. By the time that bottle sits on a shelf in a store, half the hydrogen is already gone. You're buying water that has already lost most of what you paid premium pricing for.

But here's the real scam. Most of these bottled water companies are literally filtering municipal tap water, adding minerals or chemicals to change the pH, and charging you ten to twenty times what that water costs to produce. They're not sourcing from pristine mountain springs. They're running pipes into the same dirty municipal systems everyone else uses, running it through industrial chemical machines, and selling it back to you in plastic bottles.

The plastic itself is the second crime. It leaches chemicals. It creates waste. It requires petroleum to manufacture and fuel to ship. Those heavy plastic bottles cost pennies but generate enormous freight expenses, all of which get passed to you. Meanwhile, the owners of these companies drive Range Rovers and Teslas funded entirely by people who think drinking water with a different pH will solve their health problems.

If you're going to spend money on water at all, buy spring water from an actual natural source. At least you know it came from nature, not from a municipal water treatment facility repackaged as innovation. Better yet, get a decent home water filter and drink filtered tap water. It costs almost nothing and actually addresses real problems like chlorine and sediment.

The alkaline water and hydrogen water industries exist because people are desperate for simple solutions to complex health problems. They're not desperate enough to question whether the solution is real. So companies manufacture credibility by adding words like "alkaline" and "hydrogen," wrap it in a bottle, and watch people buy health that doesn't exist.

Your money would be better spent on literally anything else. Real food. Therapy. A yoga class. Sleep. None of those come in plastic bottles, and all of them will actually change how you feel.
