Character Is the Shield

Character Is the Shield

Before recovery, the only thing we had to counter our hormones, our moods, and our mental storms was acting out. We used addiction to regulate what we did not know how to handle.

In recovery, that changes. Our resistance to the negative mind becomes character.

Character is what stands between impulse and action. It is what overrides whatever random thought, urge, or emotion flows through the brain. Character resists impatience, self centeredness, laziness, and cruelty.

Character development begins with awareness. You notice you are bored, irritated, or restless, and instead of escaping, you choose a healthier way to find relief. You notice anger toward someone who is struggling, and instead of judging or withdrawing, you look for a way to offer kindness. You notice you hurt someone, and you apologize quickly, sincerely, and without excuses.

That is character.

Accountability is one of the deepest forms of strength. When self esteem is healed, it becomes easy to say, I was wrong. I am sorry. There is no collapse in that. There is dignity.

As character grows, compassion stops feeling like work. Service stops feeling forced. Kindness becomes natural. It moves into the background of the mind and starts running on its own.

Until then, while we are still repairing the holes in our character, we remain reactive. Too many things knock us off center. But as character develops, what once sent us spinning simply bounces off. We stay present. We stay open. We choose where to give our energy.

True awakening does not announce itself. You only see it later, when you look back and realize how many people you did not harm, and how many you helped.
